Ingredients:

  • 2 fl oz (60 ml) High-proof Rye Whiskey
  • 1 fl oz (30 ml) Amaro Averna
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 dash Black Walnut Bitters (or Orange Bitters)
  • Ice (Sufficient for stirring)
  • 1 Amarena or Luxardo Cherry, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Chill the Glassware: Place your serving glass (Coupe or Nick & Nora) in the freezer, or fill it with ice water while preparing the cocktail. This is crucial for maintaining the drink's temperature.
  2. Ready the Mixing Glass: Fill the mixing glass approximately two-thirds full with large, dense ice cubes.
  3. Measure and Add Spirits: Using your jigger, carefully measure and pour the Rye Whiskey and Amaro Averna directly over the ice in the mixing glass.
  4. Add Bitters: Add the specified 2 dashes of Angostura and 1 dash of Black Walnut bitters.
  5. The Stirring Technique: Insert the bar spoon and gently stir the ingredients for a controlled 20 to 30 seconds until the mixture is thoroughly chilled and the outside of the mixing glass is frosty, achieving the ideal dilution.
  6. Strain: Empty the chilled serving glass of water or ice. Place the strainer over the mixing glass and strain the cocktail cleanly into the serving vessel.
  7. Garnish: Place one Amarena or Luxardo cherry gently into the bottom of the glass or thread it onto a cocktail pick and rest it on the rim. Serve immediately.
