Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 box (432g) spice cake mix
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Instructions:

  1. Melt 2 tbsp of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Toss in the sliced apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cook for 5–7 minutes until the apples are slightly softened and the liquid has reduced into a thick syrup. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, melted butter, eggs, milk, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2–3 minutes until the batter is smooth and glossy.
  3. Pour half of the batter into a greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Spread the sautéed apple mixture evenly over the layer.
  4. Top with the remaining batter, smoothing it with a spatula.
  5. Combine the granulated sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 2 tbsp melted butter, then sprinkle the mixture across the top of the cake.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the edges are golden brown.
