Ingredients:
- 2 lbs Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 box (432g) spice cake mix
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp melted butter
Instructions:
- Melt 2 tbsp of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Toss in the sliced apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cook for 5–7 minutes until the apples are slightly softened and the liquid has reduced into a thick syrup. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, melted butter, eggs, milk, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2–3 minutes until the batter is smooth and glossy.
- Pour half of the batter into a greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Spread the sautéed apple mixture evenly over the layer.
- Top with the remaining batter, smoothing it with a spatula.
- Combine the granulated sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 2 tbsp melted butter, then sprinkle the mixture across the top of the cake.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the edges are golden brown.
